GOOD TIME for the family

Seize the day-and countless opportunities to smile-when you take your family on an outdoor adventure. There's no better place to start than at a local pumpkin patch. These familiar fall icons found across the South offer various activities, food, and, of course, the chance to select your own pumpkin.

Find fresh-air pleasures and activities galore at the nearest pumpkin patch.

Nothing says the season like a field of pumpkins, and rightly so because the supply reaches its peak of availability in October. Many of the pumpkins found at you-pick farms are types better suited for carving, not for eating. Smaller "pie" pumpkins contain less moisture and denser flesh.

However, when cooked, these little pumpkins pack a nutritious punch with potassium and vitamin A. If they're available, try one.

Once you and your family get in the fields, picking the perfect potential jack-o'-lantern depends on personal preference and a few basic tips. Look for a fruit (yes, a pumpkin is a fruit) with the stem still attached. Most pumpkins will have good and bad sides. Avoid ones with mold, bruises, or soft spots. Whatever you or your kids select, make sure your choice can sit flat. (For great ideas on what to do with your pumpkins, see pages 74 and 134.)

time out

Though pumpkin picking may top the list, most local patches provide other activities to entice you. Your children may find moonwalks, haystacks, or play areas. Or at many places, they will enjoy taking a wagon or hayride to the pumpkin fields. It all depends on the resources and focus of each establishment.

Many locations have corn mazes. Some are simple and easy to follow, while others require time and a willingness to wander through puzzling twists and turns. At some pumpkin patches, well-known maze designers create elaborate challenges that draw large numbers of fans.

animal magnetism

Visitors get to experience a small slice of farm life at some pumpkin patches. Many of these places function as traditional farms throughout the year. Around September, when the pumpkins begin to ripen, owners will open their fields, acreage, and barns to the public.

Your little companions will thrill to see real chickens, cows, goats, and pigs. (The menagerie varies from place to place.) Getting to pet many of these animals only adds to the excitement. Be sure to wash up after enjoying the petting zoo. Always keep disposable clean wipes on hand in case soap and water are not convenient.

food for thought

If you want to make a day of your outing, carry light snacks, or pack a healthful picnic lunch. Your kids (and you) will burn off lots of energy exploring everything the pumpkin patch offers.

fall season's greetings

The beauty of going on an outdoor adventure with your family is sharing all of the surprises and joys you discover together. These gifts-fresh air, fun activities, laughter, and more-tickle the senses and create memories that will last long after the pumpkin withers away.
